FINAL EXAM

  1. Discuss your experience on staff this semester. Was it what you expected? If yes, how. If not, what not? This experience was amazing! this was not what I was expecting. I've never been in a class where I need to look for my assignments but the fact that this class pushes you to be proactive made me enjoy it more. At first, it was scary scary, but then after my first article was published the fear went away.
  2. How did the coronavirus impact you in this class this semester? Provide examples. It made it harder to find sources. I noticed this because of the way this semester went. There were stories that I was working on and I was eager to write them but sources did not answer or their schedules were too full. I believe that if this was not COVID times it could be easier to find sources because on campus you are able to explore and ask. Als, it was hard to find pitches to write about because I am not close to school and even though seems that there is no problem with that I believe it is. I had plenty of ideas of stories I could write about and until the Vax Winter Festival I was able to understand how easy it was to get sources if you are in an in-person scenario.
  3. What was your job on staff this semester? How would you rate your performance in that position? Why? Provide details. My job this semester was to be a reporter. I will grade myself 8-10 because i did not start earlier enough for my semester to be calm and not just full stress to see about the stories that I was writing. Even though it took me a while to start writing, when I did it felt amazing. I felt I was doing what I really like.
  4. What was your strong point this semester? Be specific. Talking to people, interviewing them. I did not notice how social I was until I had to interview people. There is not a single drop of fear when approaching people with "Is it ok if I interview you?"
  5. What was your weak point? Be specific. Creativity and ideas of stories that I can write about.
  6. What was your favoriteI story that you worked on this semester? Why?I think that my favorite story was the Vax Winter Festival because I felt like this is actually what being a journalist is. I was taking pictures, talking to people and made me feel like this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
  7. What changes in the class would you like to see made for next semester? Why? I would say that the main change that this class has to make does not have to do with the capacity of the professor but the capacity of the status of the pandemic. I believe that this class is perfect as it is, just it would be so much fun if it was in person.
  8. What did you learn about the job of journalism this semester? Be specific.  Don't take too much time overthinking about it, just write. At first, I was scared of showing my work, of writing. I was just scared of failing. After I wrote the first story and was published, that changed completely. It felt as if someone took off the bandite.
  9. What did you learn about yourself? Be specific. I learned that I need to trust more in myself because I showed myself over and over again that I was able to do it even though it seem hard.
  10. What was the most difficult thing about this class? Worst thing? The most difficult thing is to adapt to the way that the class is divided. I was so used to having assignment on my calendar and just following them. I was not used to look for my own assignments and that was one of the major challenges I had to face this semester.
  11. What was the easiest thing about this class? Best thing? This question it is very hard to answer because I don't think there was something that was super easy about it. Even the discussions made you think and research so, I believe that there's not something easy about this class.
  12. If you could design J11, what requirements would you make? For example, how many stories/briefs/pitches/editor reports, tweets, news quizzes etc. would you implement? Explain why and be specific. I believe that the way this course is designed is very rich of knowledge. With this, I mean that there are options when it comes to writing stories that make it mixed and diverse. I was able to write almost all of my stories. Maybe I will take one of the new's stories and put another story of choice. I think this change could be made because most of the students in Journalism 11 are journalism major or something very similar. When people write about what their are interested about wonderful things come out.
  13. Did you enjoy our guest speakers? Did any stand out in particular? Why/Why not? I did enjoy the guests speakers. They provided very important information. The guest speaker that stood out for me was Jessixa Oglive because I loved what she was interested about like the project of El Cartel de Sinaloa. She also motivated me to write about what makes me passionate about but as she said we have to eat too and it might not be something that makes you feel passion.
  14. What else can I do, and/or the journalism department do, to help you in your journalism classes? Nothing, you are an amazing teacher. You always offer support and help and for someone to learn is crucial to have a mentor like you.
  15. What are your plans for next semester? If transferring, where? Returning to staff? Staying at EC but focusing on other classes? Not sure? My last semester at El Camino College is winter semester and I plan on transferring to either Long Beach Cal state or Fullerton both with great journalism projects hopefully they accept me :) And I'll be working on Inglewood Times to have some experience and that way be able to get to where I want to get, Vice.
